The “marinera” is an elegant Peruvian dance that involves a lot of flirting, specific dance steps and particular clothing. For example, the woman dancing a “marinera” will oftentimes be wearing an intricate Moche lace dress. In this work, although inspired by the various elements that make up the “marinera,” Zúñiga does not cite a particular customary melody, nor does he intend this piece to accompany dancers.
Writing in “The Clarinet,” Gregory Barrett finds that Zúñiga‘s “take on this idiom suggests fancy footwork due to varying meters and syncopation.” He goes on to say that it “is a fun piece to play, with a tonally ambiguous ending.”
