Grade 4. Approx. duration: three and a half minutes.

Poet Aleister Crowley was an extremely controversial figure. As it turns out, he practiced more than just a mere dabbling in the occult and was highly critical of Christian values, to mention just a few of his scandalizing characteristics. Nevertheless, Walker is struck by the richness of many of Crowley’s verses, not only by the way in which he makes frequent allusion to music, but especially by the imagery and sound produced by his poetic syntax. In the “Rose and the Cross,” Walker uses imitative techniques amongst the voices to signify the theme of unity suggested by the text.
