Written around 1848 for the Masonic funeral of Juan José Conde, a military hero of the independence movement in Venezuela, Cántico Fúnebre is a work for tenor soloist and orchestra of remarkable extension and complexity. The genre is typical of the Venezuelan repertoire of the time and consists of strings plus flute and two horns. It is structured in two large parts, the first of which is made up of four subsections marked, Recitativo, Molto sostenuto, Recitativo and Maestoso. The second part consists of two subsections, Moderato and Allegro. An operatic influence is very evident, but although there is some difficulty in accomodating it within one of its characteristic genres, the one that seems to come closest is the so-called arioso, primarily because of the nature of the first part and its alternation between recitativo and sostenuto. The central Moderato is reminiscent of a tarantella or Spanish jota, mainly because of its animated character and dance style. Indeed, it is structured almost as if it were an independent piece within the overall entirety of the work. However, its role seems to be one of contrast with the first part, which is more dramatic and serious, and serves as a bridge to the final Allegro, in which the singer must respond to multiple technical demands, such as fiorituras, high notes and rhythmic acrobatics in the style of the Italian bel canto.
