The Bocaina Mountain Range National Park is located in the southeastern region of Brazil between the borders of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. Written in 2019, the “Bocaina Suite” for French horn and piano is based on three scenes that inspired the composer while traveling though this area.
The first movement, “Golden Trail,” refers to a famous rock trail that was built by slaves in the 18th century to smuggle precious metals from São José do Barreiro to the coastal town of Angra do Reis, thus avoiding Portuguese imperial taxes. Running through thick, tangled forest, it is still quite demanding.
The second movement is inspired by the iconic ruins of a house that was built around the beginning of the 20th century. The owner’s wife became displeased and abandoned the house, leaving it open to vandalism.
The last movement depicts the Santo Izidro waterfall, which is located in the Mantiqueira Mountains. Nearly 260 feet high, the force of its water is so intense that it is impossible to swim to its base.
