Toribio Segura was born in Spain near the end of the 18th century. Around 1814 he briefly lived in France in the residence of guitarist Fernando Sor. Later, he visited several Italian cities and in Rome studied with Paganini. In 1816 a student persuaded him to move to Cuba where he promoted chamber music, conducted orchestras, composed incidental works for violin, piano and voice, and published two music journals. Segura was a frequent recitalist who performed not only throughout the Caribbean but also in several cities in the United States. After a number of performances in the Caribbean during the mid 1830s, in 1837 he settled in Venezuela, where he carried out activities similar to those that he had performed in Havana. However, in 1850 he returned to Cuba where he died some ten years later.
Segura’s “Six Divertissemens avec quatre Walzes & deux Rondeaux pour la guitare” were composed and published while Segura was living in Paris. Held by France’s National Library, the original publication is an album of six brief pieces that are each followed by a waltz or rondo. The first set in C major, marked “Maestoso” and “Walze,” is followed by four other sets in sharp keys (G major to E major) and the last set in a flat key (D minor).
