Wind quintet and piano.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: ten and a half minutes.
Set includes piano score and five parts.
Presumed to have been composed between 1944 and 1952, Enrique Soro’s two-movement work for wind quintet and piano is perhaps the second of its kind to have been composed in Latin America (a one-movement sextet by Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone was composed in 1935). Although the exact circumstances of its composition are unknown, its title alludes to Felipe Lautaro (1534?-1557), a Mapuche who led the indigenous resistance against the Spanish in Chile.
The first documented performance of this work occurred on May 26, 1996, when the Hindemith Quintet and pianist Luis Alberto Latorre included the work on a program that took place at the Casa Piedra concert hall near Santiago, Chile.
