Guitar quartet.
Grade 4-5. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set includes score and four parts.
Kamanchaka (“darkness” in the Aymara language) takes its name from the dense haze or fog that suddenly appears in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This fog was especially feared in the areas around nitrate fields, because if a person was out sloppily walking into an area of kamachaka, he ran a real risk of getting lost. Indeed, many “soaked” individuals, as they were popularly called, met with a tragic fate. For this reason, this work evokes ideas of confusion by overlapping contrasting rhythms and other musical figures. It also incorporates moments of tension through the use of tremolos, as well as “lost” (unfinished) melodies that seem to bring the wind. A soft curtain of harmonics represents the appearance of the Kamanchaka that in turn serves to announce the distinct sections of the piece.
