Solo for unaccompanied bassoon.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set includes a performance score.
The composer says: “What nobody tells you about fleeing from your native country is the burden you will forever carry on your shoulders regarding your own memories: that they would affect your mood at every moment of your new life, making it a little bit worse than what it actually is, missing people, places, smells, textures…
“In my case, one of the things I’m missing the most since I emigrated from Venezuela is that unique orange-textured sky over Caracas at dusk. However, as time passes, I began to admire and love the sundown at the place I now call home where it appears slightly different, but always an orange-textured sky, that triggers my anxieties.
“‘Soledad Naranja’ attempts to musically reflect a symbiosis between the Venezuelan and Dutch dusks as seen from the same pair of eyes, using rhythmic elements that perhaps could be traced back to the western Venezuelan ‘Gaita Zuliana’ in 6/8, along with the alternating use of playful, yet sorrowful intervals in the development of a short melodic motif, which depicts the human scale of our burden within the world.”
