This work is inspired in the contemporary Venezuelan rhythm known as “Onda Nueva,” developed in the early 1970s, which features borrowed elements from folk musical genres. In this composition Santaella mixes these with jazz chordal progressions.
In the first section modal elements are introduced in a deconstructed exposition. From measure 43 on, the material is properly exposed and developed using the specific “Onda Nueva” rhythmic pattern (fast tempo in measured 3/4 bars). The third section is a final reexposition of the musical material (beginning in measure 150), but just not in the same order or structure.
