This piece was commissioned by the Panamanian flutist Elani Mejía for her masters recital. The first movement is in the style of Panamanian folk dance known as a "punto;" the second is based on the "atravesao," the fastest and most cheerful dance of Panamanian folklore. In 6/8 meter, the rhythm frequently alternates between polyrhythms and hemiolas. Dos Miniaturas was premiered by Elani Mejía in Montreal, Canada, in 2006.
This piece is on the VBODA (Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association) and the MBDA (Maryland Band Directors Association) solo/ensemble music lists.
