Product of an ample dissemination in dance halls, on the radio and in the movies, the danzón was one of the first manifestations of Latin American popular music to gain attention at the beginning of the 20th century. In this work, Pérez Valero establishes a dialog between the popular sounds of the Caribbean and a more contemporary sonority through the use of traditional contrapuntal techniques. Though an adventurous work, “Tropical Counterpoint” is at the same time rather conservative; but because of these same qualities it is ideal as either the beginning or concluding work on a program of Latin American music. Syncretism, avant-gardism and fusion are the stylistic features of this composition, which is reminiscent of the tropical heat of the Caribbean.
