Solo for unaccompanied flute.
Grade 5-6. Approx. duration: slightly less than three minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
“Transversales” was composed while Pérez Valero was visiting Rome. In this piece he uses for the first time a Bartokian approach to composition that was described by Erno Lendvai as the “axis system,” and in so doing also demonstrates Pérez Valero’s stylistic versatility. The score represents a challenge for the technical and expressive capabilities of the flutist, who must manage temporal changes as well as a wide range of dynamics. The final section reveals a more minimalist style. In short, the piece requires a high degree of virtuosity, not only as it relates to instrumental technique but to breath control as well.
This piece is on the VBODA (Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association) Solo/Ensemble Music List.
Angel Pérez, flute.
