Flute quartet (three flutes, one alto flute).
Grade 3. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set consists of a score and four parts.
The “tamunangue” is a folk dance that is performed as part of a religious festival in the Venezuelan state of Lara. The name of the dance is derived from that of the drum, the tamunango, which provides the dance its characteristic beat. The music reveals the syncretic influence of three cultures, that of the African, Spanish and American indigenous.
Inspired not only by the “tamunangue” as a folk dance but also by its associated religious festivities, in this work Pérez Valero seeks to recreate the syncretic mixture of cultures within a personal language. In particular, the composer has incorporated typical rhythmic elements along with characteristic intervallic relationships, such as the minor third and major sixth.
