Set consists of a performance score.
Paraka Wachoi is the name of a lake that is located in the southern part of Venezuela. According to the original inhabitants of the area, the indigenous Piaroa, the lake possessed magical qualities, such as being the resting place for the souls of the dead and also as a portal for communication with the spirit world. Pérez Valero taps into this native mythology to create a work in which minor seconds and thirds are used to evoke an atmosphere that is somewhere between the disturbing and the ethereal. At the same time, through contrasts of tempo and the search for wind effects and the use of frullato the composer seeks to recreate indigenous sonorities. The piece makes for an excellent choice when considering a recital program built around contemporary repertoire, or, as an etude. In short, “Paraka Wachoi” is the result of a search for ancestral sonorities that lie somewhere between the past and the present.
Claude Kashnig gave the world premier performance of this work on June 21, 2018, as part of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Summer Concert Series.
Claude Kashnig, tuba.
