The rumba is a kind of popular Latin American music that has had an ample repercussion around the world, especially during the 1930s and 1940s. Since then, it has been hybridized into other styles, such as the mambo, chachachá, and later, salsa. This original work for bassoon and piano is inspired in the basic rhythmic patterns of the rumba and plays with the reiterative use of the rhythmic cell of the rumba in the piano, which in turn generates melodies in the bassoon that have a lyric or virtuosic character. The piece can be easily included on a program of traditional Latin American music or on programs focused on contemporary styles of a more universal nature. In other words, “Fantasy Rumba” evokes the rhythms, airs and dance music of the Caribbean but with added elements of the musical language of the 21st century.
