Here is our monthly summary about Cayambis composers and artists and their recent activities.

Luis Pérez Valero informed us that an Argentinean music journal, El oído pensante, recently published his article (in Spanish), “Industry and Tropical Music: Notes from a History of Music Production in Hispanic America and the Caribbean, 1901-1968.”

On June 29, Dr. José Manuel Lezcano (Professor of Music) performed a solo recital of Iberoamerican works for guitar, at Convento de San Agusti, by invitation of the Barcelona Festival of Song, including three guitar solos by Lezcano (Preludio de Cayo Hueso, Bolero Manaba, and Mojito & Habano). He also rehearsed and performed with student and professional singers at the Festival, which is dedicated to the performance and dissemination of art-songs in Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and indigenous American languages.
Dr. Lezcano was also invited to give a lecture-recital at the international Animamusic Congresso de Organologia, in Caldas de Reinha, Portugal, July 7, 2018; “The Guitar in Spain: Musical Reflections of a Turbulent History.” He performed complete works and excerpts from 500 years of Spanish guitar repertory, contextualizing the guitar as an instrument that reflects the main currents of Spain's turbulent history, including the Inquisition, the 19th century Peninsular Wars, the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), and how composers were affected, exiled, or silenced.

At the National Library of Chile on August 13, a concert that was part of the “Migrant Music” series was presented, in which several works of Chilean and Venezuelan composers were performed, including Juan López-Maya’s edition of Federico Villena’s Op. 76 Quintet. In addition to presenting this work, during that afternoon Juan also served as the Master of Ceremonies.

On August 14, Samuel Robles spoke about his works for clarinet at the first Clarinet Festival in Panama.

On August 14 and 15, Alvaro Ponce de León participated in an international percussion festival that was held at the National University of Music in Peru. In addition, he also gave a master class on Brazilian rhythms (pictured behind the drumset) and performed on the gala concert.

Today, Nicolás Kliwadenko will be premiering a collaborative composition that was created with the assistance of the Chilean composer and guitarist Francisco Martínez for the “Taller Ciclo” collective. Titled, Tombeau de Cecil Taylor, the concert will be held at the Needle Bellas Artes in Santiago.

On August 27, Federico Núñez will be performing Carlos Guastavino’s Sonata No. 3 at the Astor Piazzolla Conservatory in Buenos Aires. Then, during the first week of September, the latest edition of an international classical guitar festival will be taking place in Santiago (see below). Federico is part of the committee that organizes these events.

Rodrigo Herrera wrote to us about the premiere of his chamber ballet, Ofrendas bajo el agua, that will take place on September 7 in the Pompeya Theater in Valparaiso, Chile. The work consists of ten musicians, four ballerinas and narration in the Mapdungun language.

Last, but certainly not least, while at the flute convention in Orlando we were contacted by Katherine Pitts, who provided us with a lovely testimonial about her experience with one of the works she had purchased from us, Gabriel Yela’s Flauta Espiritual. She writes: “I originally found Cayambis Music Press while searching for unique quality sheet music from Latin America. I needed an appropriate piece for the Alabama Spanish Convention Soloist Competition last year in Tuscaloosa. Not only did the piece leave the audience in a daze, but I actually won First Place in the state! So I wanted to thank Cayambis for providing quality compositions that are true to their roots.”

You’re welcome and congratulations, Katherine. We’re happy it all worked out so well for you.
