The Academic Director of the National Conservatory of Peru, Nilo Velarde, was in Poland’s Krakow Conservatory during the middle of May. In addition to observing the pedagogical practices within the Polish conservatory, Velarde strengthened an already successful relationship between the two conservatories.
Nicolás Kliwadenko reports that his piece, Dédalo (2012), for alto and tenor sax was premiered on July 17 in Montijo, Spain, by the CexSax Duo (Diego Carretero and Sara Zazo).
This month, Peru’s Ministry of Culture has been presenting a series of four concerts based on a compilation of traditional melodies whose texts feature the 47 indigenous languages that are spoken within that country. The musical arrangements, created by Sadiel Cuentas, reveal an original style that falls within the tradition of classical vocal music, but at the same time making use of many of the contemporary techniques developed within the past century.
Violinist Mariolga Salas and flutist Daniel Salas recently defended their thesis at the Carabobo Music Conservatory in Venezuela. Their investigative work focuses on Luis Pérez Valero’s works for these two instruments.
Jannet Alvarado composed incidental music to accompany the experimental theatrical work, Elizabeth o la Esclavitud, which was premiered yesterday in the Alfonso Carrasco Hall in Cuenca, Ecuador. The one-act play, written in 2014 by Isidro Luna, revolves around the relationship of two characters, one of whom is a young African-American woman and the other who is a middle-aged slave. The work is being directed by Andrés Vázquez.
In Guadalajara, Mexico, Demian Galindo will be receiving a master’s degree in composition this Friday, after having presented a final project titled, Hikuri neixa; obsesión personal sonora, for an unusual instrumental ensemble that consists of flute mouthpiece and flute, clarinet mouthpiece and clarinet, bass clarinet, three ocarinas, amplified guitar, electric guitar, cell phone, violin, viola, cello, string bass and fixed media.
Also this Friday, Jorge Oviedo will be finishing a work for alto flute and piano. The six-minute piece is titled, Pregón y Sanjuan.
Cantos veloces, for unaccompanied clarinet, by Luis Ernesto Gómez, will be performed at the ClarinetFest 2017 Convention in Orlando, Florida, on July 29 by the Venezuelan clarinetist, Carmen Teresa Borregales. The program will also include a performance of Paul Desenne’s sonata for clarinet and piano.
Borregales is the principal clarinetist of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and also teaches at the Latin American Academy of the Clarinet.
Kent Holliday’s works for piano, Incantation from the Popul Vuh and Piano Sonata Number Three, are slated to be recorded early this fall by the English pianist Martin Jones.
