We received word from the following Cayambis composers and artists about their recent activities.
Under the baton of Dario Sotelo, the Symphonic Band of the Tatuí Conservatory in Tatuí, Brazil (about 30 minutes northwest of São Paulo) premiered Alexandre Travassos’ Role Playing Game Fantasy Suite on March 10, 2018.
We mentioned this in the “Recent Performances” section of our newsletter, but we thought you’d like to see this very nice photo that Adriana Verdié sent of the two musicians who gave the US premiere on March 19 of her de mujeres y elementos. Pictured below, from left to right, pianist Kei Matsuo, Adriana Verdié and mezzo-soprano Natalie Gonzalez.

As a rule, musicologists are thrilled when their work is able to reach a broader audience than normal, so we were happy to learn that Jannet Alvarado’s research led to the release of a CD, “Tonos del Niño Cuencanos del Siglo XIX,” that was produced in Cuenca, Ecuador. The disk includes eleven traditional Christmas songs that were found in the archives of cathedrals, churches and convents.
Nicolás Kliwadenko reports that his work for solo piano, abaq, was selected to represent Chile in the World New Music Days that is organized every year by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). The 2018 version of this event will be held in Beijing, China, during the last week of May. Kliwadenko’s work will be performed by Russian pianist Mikhail Dubov, who is a member of the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble.
Jazz Indigo, by Miguel Santaella for flute, bass clarinet, piano, cello and soprano, which was commissioned by the AKOM Ensemble of Rotterdam, and with unpublished texts by poet Peter Holvoet-Hanssen, is scheduled to be premiered on April 14 as part of the Rotterdam Woordnacht International Poetry Festival. The premiere will take place at two locations, at the Rotterdam Conservatory (CODARTS) and at the Schouwburg Rotterdam.
Juan López-Maya will be giving a lecture titled, “Columas de armonía: la tradición musical masónica en los siglos XVIII y XIX” on April 19 at the National Library in Santiago, Chile.
Finally, Cayambis artist Kimberly Davis will be performing a program of Latin American solo piano music at the Warrenville Public Library in Warrenville, Illinois, on Sunday, April 29, at 2pm. The program will include Nilo Velarde’s Inesperada oscuridad.
