Gabriel Yela was recently elected president of the executive board of the National Symphony Orchestra of Guatemala. Oboist Carlos Galdámez was elected as vice president and violinist Estuardo Gómez will be the new board secretary.

On January 27, under the baton of Swiss conductor Emmanuel Siffert, Jorge Oviedo’s work, Volcanic Suite, was performed in Quito, Ecuador, by that country’s National Symphonic Orchestra. Meanwhile, two days from now, the Symphonic Orchestra of Cuenca, Ecuador, also under the direction of Emmanuel Siffert, will be presenting the world premiere of Oviedo’s Cristales. The soloist will be Ecuadorian violinist Marco Saula Fuentes.

Two days ago, Federico Núñez presented a program of Argentine guitar music at the San Carlos Museum in Mexico City. And on the 18th, he will be flying to Costa Mesa, California to participate in Vanguard University’s Guitar Festival, where he will be giving a master class, a conference paper and a concert.

Sobre la rama baja, a mixed octet for soprano, winds and strings by Luis Ernesto Gómez, was premiered last Thursday at the University of Michigan by the Khemia Ensemble, in a program called “Sounds of the Hispanoshere.”

Angel Hernández won a scholarship from the Eötvos Contemporary Music Foundation, to attend its “DialogScene” workshop from February 8 until February 13 in Budapest, where he will also be working with Peter Eötvös and Pascal Dusapin. Angel’s funds will also allow him to work on his opera, Dee & Dun, with a libretto by Lewis Carroll. This coming Sunday, Angel’s work Cuadros de Cámara, will be premiered by the Ensamble Contemporáneo Simón Bolívar, under the direction of Alfredo Rugeles.

Finally, Fernando Oliveira wrote to inform us that in March his work, Prolação, which was commissioned by the Duo Obliquo (guitarists Atilio Rocha and Felipe Marques de Mello), will be premiered by this group. In addition, Fernando reports that he is currently finishing another work, called Contemplação, and also is in conversation with the Nordic Saxophone Quartet, for which a piece is currently on the drawing board.
