On January 16, Angel Hernández’s “Estudio Imaginario No. 1” for piano was premiered in Eisenstadt, Austria, by Nikolaus Guschlbauer. In addition, his composition, “Cuadros de Cámara,” was selected for inclusion in the XIX Latin American Music Festival, which will be held in Caracas during the month of May.

Yesterday, in Valencia, Venezuela, Luis Pérez Valero moderated a panel discussion on the reconsideration of musical nationalism.

Federico Núñez, who recently attended an international guitar conference in Cuba, was interviewed on Havana radio, the partial transcript of which is posted online. He also told us that it was an honor for him to meet Leo Brouwer backstage (on the right in the picture below) during one of the conference events.

Alvaro Zúñiga wrote to let us know that his composition, “Proemio,” was recorded by the Lux Nova Duo (Jorge Paz, guitar; Lydia Schmidl, accordion) as part of their first compact disk, “Intuiciones.”

The Khemia Ensemble (part of our Artist Program) performed a program of American and Latin American works on February 6 at the Bethlehem United Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Flutist Julie Koidin of the Ondas Ensemble (part of our Artist Program) would like us to pass along her invitation to anyone in the Chicago area to attend this Sunday’s Choro Club jam session.

Finally, we really didn’t have a place for this, but fifteen of our editions for flute were selected by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Association (VBODA) for inclusion on their solo-ensemble list (in the “publisher field” search by using the word, “cayambis”). For our readers outside of the United States, nearly every state in this country holds competitions for school age musicians who must generally select their repertoire from a state-approved list. Needless to say, we were thrilled when we received news from this very important organization.
