Solo for alto flute accompanied by piano.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: slightly more than six minutes.
Set consists of a piano score and one part.
This work for alto flute and piano reveals the influence of Latin American folkloric traditions on two distinctly different levels. In the first section, Oviedo exploits the lyrical capabilities and low tessitura of the alto flute to suggest a stylized imagination of the pregón, which is a sort of melodized street cry traditionally used by Latin American vendors as they walk city streets hawking their products. In the second section, Oviedo focuses on the rhythmic characteristics of the Sanjuan (or Sanjuanito), which is a pre-Conquest genre of the Ecuadorean Andes. Its rhythm is said to transmit an emotional energy that causes its listeners to join in circle dances. The Sanjuan is typically performed with autochthonous wind instruments, such as the quena, zampoña and rondador.
