The work Sertonancias No.1 was composed in 2011. It belongs to a series of works, each written for a different instrumental formation, from solo instrument to the orchestra. The title of the series is an homage to the "sertão", a region of arid climate, located mainly in the Brazilian northeast. The work is divided into three movements; its melodic material is based on the harmonic scale (D-E-F#-G#-A-Bb-C-C#-D). In the first movement, the harmonic scale is used starting from the notes D and G; in the second movement, starting from F and in the third, starting from Bb.
