Sextet for flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn and bassoon.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set includes a score and six parts.
This three-movement work for wind sextet represents something of a thought experiment around the traditional Brazilian musical genre known as the “choro.” The first movement is an introduction to the typical harmonic and melodic components of this genre; however, since as a style the “choro” is highly improvisational (and is in fact sometimes known as Brazilian jazz), this approach creates the tension that propels this movement towards its concluding measures. By juxtaposing the bassoon and the horn in the second movement (while the other four instruments chatter in the background), the composer flirts with the meaning of two words in Portuguese that begin with baix: “baixo” (bass) and “baixarias” (vulgarities). The third movement, a classic rondo, makes extensive use of counterpoint as well as more traditional harmonies and modulations.
