Adapted from a Brazilian novel, Garatuja is the nickname of the story's protagonist, who is a debauched caricaturist employed in the notary's office of his future father-in-law. Nepomuceno uses various thematic, descriptive and other techniques to musicalize this story.
The work was premiered on October 28, 1904, in Rio de Janeiro by an orchestra conducted by Arthur Napoleão. A subsequent notable performance took place on September 23, 1920, when visiting Richard Strauss conducted the work while he was in Rio de Janeiro.
Its most recent performance in the US was given by Dr. Leon Burke III and the University City Symphony Orchestra on October 16, 2022.
Formatting.
The conductor’s score is printed on tabloid sized (11x17) paper coil-bound on the left-hand edge; the library/institutional/perusal score, as well as the orchestral parts, are printed on 9x12 paper.
