Opera was the dominant musical force in Venezuela during the 19th century. In addition to performances of Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, et al, the public was treated to arrangements of opera highlights for all sorts of combinations of instruments, including piano and marching bands. In 1878 Montero was commissioned by four Masonic colleagues to write a piece for a series of charity concerts organized by the Fraternal Lodge of Caracas. The composer came up with this charming fantasy that combines not only some of the most beloved moments of Verdi’s masterpiece, but also with a lively little tune of his own inspiration that is used as an overture and as a coda. The work was premiered in the Great Hall of the Masonic Temple on July 20, 1878.
