Two songs for voice and piano.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set includes a piano score and a vocal score.
This set consists of two works, one intended for public performance (Poema de amor) and the other perhaps not (Canto de cuna). Composed in 1930, the first song is distinguished by the fact that Mackenna seems to have been the first Chilean composer to have set the text of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) to music. It may have also been premiered in Berlin during the 1930s, and was subsequently performed for the first time in Chile in 1983 by Hanns Stein and Cirilo Vila. Since that time, it has been sung repeatedly in that country. The latter, composed in 1933, could very well have been intended as a gift to the family of her niece and goddaughter, Carmen Cuevas Mackenna (1908-2003), to whom the work is dedicated. Until recently, there has been no extant record of any performance of this song.
