Solo for piano.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: seven minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
Composed in 1935, this four-movement composition for piano is similar to other works in Mackenna’s catalog in which the title seems to suggest a connection to her homeland but, according to Chilean musicologist Raquel Bustos Valderrama, with the exception of dance-like rhythms in the first and fourth movements, identifiable Chilean elements — especially melodic ones — are largely absent in this piece.
Performance History:
This work was premiered by Rafael Silva de la Cuadra on April 21, 1938, at the Municipal Theater in Santiago, Chile. Silva had recently returned to Chile after a 16-year period in Germany, during which time he had been studying music and performing at the piano.
This work was performed again in Chile by Jubitza Guzmán on June 8, 2017 in the Music Archives Hall of that country‘s national library.
The US premiere was performed by Andrew Kraus on March 17, 2019, on the campus of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Andrew Kraus, piano.
