Bassoon solo with piano accompaniment.
Grade 4+. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set includes a piano score and one part.
The melody that serves as the theme for these variations is taken from the gavotte movement of Blanca Estrella’s “Ballet Miniatura,” which is a children’s suite that was composed in 1965. The humor and ingenuity of this work have been matched in these variations through the use of contrasting registers and timbres in both instruments. In addition, in homage to this remarkable but little-known composer, López-Maya incorporates a number of her own stylistic resources, such as the use of popular dance rhythms, frequent changes of meter, displaced accents and a seemingly traditional harmony that is peppered with unexpected effects and chords that reveal a rather rough sonority.
Daniel Lipori, bassoon
Martin Kennedy, piano
