Solo for unaccompanied oboe.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: seven minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
Creolisms is a set of variations on “La Perica,” a Venezuelan joropo attributed to the 19th century composer Lino Gallardo. It was very popular in Venezuela during the first half of the 20th century and there are numerous recordings of it made by local and foreign artists. These variations explore different aspects of the theme while always trying to maintain the original popular sonority. In the Scherzo a reference is made to the Cuban “son,” while in “Lullaby” the expressive and cantabile quality of the oboe is exploited. The third and last variation returns to the joropo rhythm and restates the theme as a coda.
