In 1878 Chilean writer Martina Barros de Orrego (1850-1944) may have inspired José White to write “Zamacueca” for violin and piano. In her autobiography, “Recuerdos de mi vida,” she talks about how popular it was to dance the “cueca” (a Chilean national dance) during her youth. After enjoying a kind of eggnog, everyone would begin to dance the cueca. She goes on to say that “naturally I learned how to dance the cueca. And later in Santiago this became my best dance at every event that I attended. The famous violinist [José] White composed his famous cueca while watching me dance and followed me around the room with his violin.”
This edition has been completely re-typeset from original sources.
This piece is on the MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Activities Association) Prescribed Graded Music List.
Fernando Muñoz, violin; Ana Gabriela Fernández, piano.
