A solo piece for piano.
Grade 6. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
“Tango Exótico” starts with a mass of intermingled, almost clustered bass sounds, which provide the fertile soil from which the basic tango rhythmic pattern grows. The sound is harsh and moves between clear tango patterns and self-annihilating breaks in the music, as if unsure of its own being, struggling to become what it is meant to be. This seems to happen whenever its tango character becomes too obvious as if for the sake of self annihilation, arpeggio-like passages intersect with allusions to other forms, such as toccata or even samba, but always returning to the stubborn, violent mood of the traditional tango, affirming its own, unique identity.
Inspired by a tango concert the composer attended in Berlin, Germany in 1995 this piece, in the words of critic Kathy Parsons, “abounds with vibrant energy and excitement.”
Emily Yap Chua, piano.
