Solo for bassoon with piano accompaniment.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: 11 minutes.

In his works, Gómez is seeking to define a harmonic language that lies somewhere between tonality and non-tonality. Similarly, he uses rhythms that are rooted in traditional Latin American genres as well as from experimental and cutting edge sources. In this piece, Gómez uses the metaphor of rhythmic clouds as an agglomeration of melodic lines in similar registers that are executing rhythmic patterns that are meant to be perceived diffusely, as a cloud might be perceived, but at the same time these are contrasted with lyrical fragments of clearly expressive and perceptible intervals that he calls sunny landscapes. In addition, at several specific points the work dialogs with paraphrased motives, specifically, the bassoon solo from Stravinksy’s “Rite of Spring” and a passage from the fourth movement of Bartok’s suite for piano, “Out of Doors.” The work is also a tribute to the inhabitants of Caracas, who, as they fight to stay alive, are dramatically engaged in daily acts of heroism.
Our incipit shows the transition near the end of the bassoon cadenza that opens the work to the beginning of the first dialog.
