Quintet for soprano (A4-Bb5), violin, cello, guitar and percussion.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: 12 minutes.
Set includes score and five parts.
Based on the poem of the same by Venezuelan poet Luis Alberto Angulo, “La Caja Negra” (The Black Box) was composed for soprano and a sui generis instrumental group that consists of violin, cello, guitar and percussion. A synthesis of brevity was incorporated into eight musical microcosms, of which the first is an impressionistic dance, the second, an introspective atmosphere, the third, a dance episode, and the fourth, which assumes the character of a nocturnal song in contemplation. The fifth, sixth and seventh microcosms resume previous attitudes. The last microcosm alternates two different tempos within a framework of continuous change. The duration of each ranges from just a few seconds in length to about two minutes. Some symbolic features of Angulo’s philosophy are worked into the music through the use of the Tam-tam.
