Wind octet for two flutes, two oboes (2nd doubles English horn), two clarinets and two bassoons.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: nine minutes.
Set includes score and eight parts.
In “The Time Machine,” H. G. Wells writes: “And like blots upon the landscape rose the cupolas above the ways to the Under-world. I understood now what all the beauty of the Over-world people covered. Very pleasant was their day, as pleasant as the day of the cattle in the field.” In its four movements Gervasoni’s “The Garden of the Shadows” evokes Wells’ terrible dream, a future in which the human race has degenerated into two species, one of which is the food for the other; a destiny that couldn’t be as preposterous as it seems.
Gregory Barrett reviewed this work for the March 2016 edition of “The Clarinet.” He concludes: “Gervasoni’s harmonic style is moderately dissonant and his score is nuanced with regard to dynamic markings and articulations. This is a moderately difficult work within reach of college-level chamber ensembles.”
