Nonet for flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, horn and trumpet.
Grade 4-5. Approx. duration: twelve minutes.
Set includes conductors score and nine parts.
Composed in 1932, García Caturla’s First Cuban Suite for eight winds and piano received its first performance in Havana in 1934 on a program that included music by the Cuban composer and conductor José Ardévol. A subsequent performance took place in New York City in 1945. Much of the melodic interest in this work is derived from the reiteration of brief motives that are derived from pentatonic scales. Though many of the rhythms are based on typical Cuban dances, the texture is quite dense: at many points throughout the work García Caturla juxtaposes instrumental choirs through the use of polyrhythms.
