This piece is part of a Mexican trilogy for unaccompanied flute (see “Related Products” below) that is dedicated to Ana Ligia Mastruzzo. “Kuikatl,” composed for bass flute in 2021, was written in memory of Argentine composer Gerardo Gandini and is dedicated to flutist Ana Ligia Mastruzzo. Regarding the other two movements, “Quetzali” is for unaccompanied piccolo, and “Coyolyantototl” is for flute, a double pre-Hispanic flute made from ceramic and a recited text in Nahuatl.
In English, the Nahuatl word “kuikatl” means song. The use of this term as a title serves as a source of inspiration in order to develop a work around a melody with a contemplative character. In this way, it suggests a suspension of time as it transports both the performer as well as the listener towards an introspective state.
The sonorous space here uses as it reference the interval of an untempered fourth that can be produced by a head-shaped whistle, which is an instrument that was commonly found among the pre-Hispanic cultures of Ecuador. In trying to achieve a direct analogy to the human voice, the melody seeks to emulate certain inflections by way of brief glissandi and changes of timbre during longer note values. In this way, the atmosphere of Kuikatl explores the expressivity of that instrument and its color-producing qualities.
“Kuikatl” was a finalist in the “Works Featuring Low Flute” category of the 2022 NFA Newly Published Music Competition.
