Blanca Estrella’s “Ballet Miniatura” (1965) is the first of its kind to have been composed in Venezuela. The five-movement work for ten winds and strings earned her the 1965 national prize for music. Commissioned by the Collegium Musicum and its director, Gonzalo Castellanos, the work was premiered on May 15, 1966 by this group during the Third Latin American Music Festival of Caracas. Although there is no performance data beyond its premier performance, from 1967 to 1986 the work—or excerpts from it—has appeared on various LPs produced in Venezuela.
The work can be performed as originally written (as a wind quintet and string quintet), but after the work’s editor, Juan López-Maya, listened to the much better overall balance on a recording produced by a Venezuelan orchestra in 1986, we opted to make this as a version for a small chamber orchestra. Indeed, it’s easy to hear how woefully the strings are underpowered in the 1967 recording that we have posted here (click on the “Audio Sample” tab). (Unfortunately there is no digital version of any later recordings).
