Quartet for oboe, bassoon, narrator and percussion.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set includes performance score and three parts.
This work was composed for the Argentinean duo Mim Waisbord, oboe, and Alejandro Aizenberg, bassoon, during a trip they went on back home in 1986, on the 50th anniversary year of the death of Federico García Lorca (1898-1936). During that year the poet had been taken prisoner in Spain by the fascist army and was killed (some say assassinated) by persons unknown whose motives have yet to be established.
Dirié took words and phrases from Lorca‘s writings and lectures to compose a text that could converge a simultaneous dialog between Manuel de Falla (who tried to persuade the authorities to release Lorca), the prison warden, an already dead Lorca, and some creatures that always inhabited the poet’s imagination. The composer chose the bassoon to open the piece because it reminds him of the night and a Lorquian moon.
Waisbord and Aizenberg performed the work on August 11, 1994, on a “New Music for Double Reed Instruments” concert at the 23rd annual IDRS conference held at Indiana University.
