The Australian interior landscape has inspired artists for tens of thousands of years. Against the magnitudes of size and time involved, these miniscule compositions for oboe add a microscopic, personal voice about encountering the elements that make up this land. The collection unfolds half-way between observations and meditations on the shapes of sand and how the particles that conform them grow or group themselves. “Ocher” starts from a gradual exchange of four pitches that spin out holding to new groups of particles or frequencies, which later engage in a game of their own drive. “Silica,” on the other hand, relates to perceived nuances of the diminutive, yet not without expression of the spirit that animates it. “Mauve,” finally, ventures in relating to the character of light as it travels through the landscape, moving from big formations and flickering on every singular element.
