Comellas established a relationship with German publisher Breitkopf & Härtel, which, along with Schirmer, published his surviving compositions. Although the date of composition is unknown, his “Adieu à la Havanne,” op. 2 (Goodbye to Havana) was published by the German firm around 1874. The piece is a typical 19th century “romanza,” in which the flute offers a well-balanced mix of lyricism and virtuosity, while at the same time the piano discreetly participates in the melodic elaboration.
The last reported performance of this work took place in Baltimore near the end of March 1906.
Patricia Cardona, flute; Lucy Yao, piano
