Clarinet solo accompanied by piano.
Grade 3+. Approx. duration: eight and a half minutes.
Set includes piano score and one part.
Three of the four movements that comprise “Panamanian Impressions” are either settings of Panamanian folk tunes, or else inspired by them. The first movement, “La Denesa,” quotes a very traditional folk dance before introducing a very chromatic variation on the melody. “El Punto” is an original piece, inspired by Panama’s most elegant traditional dance. The fourth movement, “El Tambor de la alegría,” quotes a very popular traditional melody, juxtaposing it with a newly-composed second section and an abbreviated return of the movement’s opening gesture.
The piece’s third movement, “Duerme, Duerme Amor,” is the one exception; its melody was composed by the composer’s mother-in-law, Rivka Goldman, when his brother-in-law was born. It is a hauntingly beautiful theme, and provides the clarinet with some very expressive moments.
