Summary
Extended Description
CMP 1460
Sextet for flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn and bassoon.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set includes a score and six parts.
The title of the first movement, “Yumbo-Yambo,” refers to the “Yumbo,” an Andean musical genre of Ecuador, the basic rhythmic cell of which coincides with iambic pentameter. The movement develops precisely along the lines of the rhythmic basis of the
“Yumbo,
” the elements of which are atomized among the various instruments, thereby creating a texture upon which a song evolves in long figurations. Moments of rhythmic irregularity contribute to the construction of the climax.
The structure of the second movement is clearly defined in the title: “Quasi una passacaglia.” On a melodic ostinato presented in the bassoon variations of different themes are developed and overlapped, as well as the ostinato theme itself, until the movement reaches its climax by way of a complex contrapuntal texture that is resolved in the coda.
The last movement takes up the idea of the first, in relation to the almost concerted treatment given to the horn. The rhythmic irregularities of this movement are inspired in the hemiola, which is present in many genres of Latin American music. However, in this movement it is not quoted literally; rather, it is translated into alternations of binary and ternary cells.
The melodic as well as the harmonic languages are eminently modal and, although freely managed, one can nevertheless appreciate the pentatonic substrate typical of Andean music.
