Duet for flute and violin.
Grade 6. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set includes a score and two parts.
Composed in 2015, this work for flute and violin continues Aquino’s investigations into the African origins of the folkloric music on the island of Hispaniola, which is amplified by the instrumentalist’s use of percussion instruments in an established formation. The result is a new sonorous color that is inspired in the music of Gagá (the Dominican Republic) and Rará (Haiti), citing in the score the locations from which the real versions arise.
The work is divided into four parts, which represent symbiosis in the two musical manifestations mentioned above. The structures, rhythmic values and measures are derived from the numbers one and two, plus their multiples. Therefore, there is one instrument that becomes two, two parts that become four, four structures that in the end are two and are one, etc.
Finally, the interaction breaks down the internal barriers and reaches its peak when the audience is invited to sing, along with the flute and violin, a sweet melody from Rará.
In addition to doubling on two percussion instruments (the flute on the cajón and triangle; the violin on the bongos and whistle), the flute and violin both double on the wind chimes. To facilitate this doubling the composer recommends that the flutist be seated on the cajón.
This work was premiered by flutist Ana Paola Rincones and violinist Victor Vivas on October 26, 2016, at the 19th Latin American Music Festival in Caracas, Venezuela.
Ana Paola Rincones, flute; Victor Vivas, violin.
