Wind sextet (flute, oboe, clarinet, 2 horns, bassoon).
Grade 5. Approx. duration: 20 minutes.
Set includes a score and six parts.
Working within a freely tonal harmonic language, each of Amengual’s four movements for wind sextet reveals neo-classical tendencies that include the pervasive use of counterpoint and terraced dynamics.
Likely composed in 1952, the work was presented in Santiago‘s Municipal Theater on December 1 of that year as part of a festival of Chilean music. The performers were Juan Bravo, flute; Carlos Romero, oboe; Julio Toro, clarinet; Fritz Berman, bassoon; and hornists Víctor Espinoza and Benjamín Silva. The following year, the work was selected for a May 30 performance at the 27th festival of the ISCM (International Society of Contemporary Music) in Oslo. The names of the performers remain unknown.
Writing about the Oslo performance in
The Musical Times
, Edward Clark notes that “Chilean René Amengual did not quite realize all the possibilities of his wind sextet; its chief feature was its rhythmical interest.” Shortly after Amengual’s untimely death the following year, Chilean musicologist Miguel Aguilar finds that in this work “the sonic novelties become more consistent and careful within the general plan of the composition, while the instrumentation presents, as a whole, a more innovative and unprejudiced vision with respect to classical form.”
René Amengual, Sextet, I, Preludio.
Hernán Jara, flute; Daniel Vidal, oboe; Jorge Levín, clarinet;
Pedro Sierra, bassoon; Mauricio Ibacache and Daniel Silva, horn.
