Trio for clarinet, marimba and piano.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: six minutes.
Set includes a performance score and two parts.
There are numerous examples in which Latin American composers will rely on re-imaginations of folklore or popular dances as a source of inspiration. However, Jannet Alvarado not only turns to the Andean “yaraví,” but also to the 19th century scherzo as a point of departure for this unusual work for clarinet, marimba and piano. Known also as the “harawi,” the yaraví is typically a slow, melodic song danced to 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4 meters. Even though many traditional yaravies are in a pentatonic or pentatonic-like scale, there is little evidence to support the assertion that this was characteristic of the yaraví melodies sung prior to the Spanish conquest.
Although in this work Alvarado uses various elements, such as a quasi-tonal harmonic language and a rather stilted dialogue between clarinet and marimba to obscure the work’s relationship to her country’s indigenous music, there are nevertheless clear indications of its presence, particularly in the clarinet. Similarly, the relationship to the scherzo is rather ambiguous; it seems most likely that rather than resorting to technical elements the composer in this case is more focused on the playful nature implied by the term.
Our opinion: the unusual instrumentation combined with a strong ending makes this a good conclusion to the first half of a recital.
