Wind quintet for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.
Grade 6. Approx. duration: thirteen and a half minutes.
Set includes a score and five parts.
This two-movement work for wind quintet is inspired in the cosmogony of the Koguis, which is one of the indigenous communities that lives in the mountainous areas of northern Colombia. Aluna, or “Great Mother,” is an actual concept in this community, and which refers to their belief that there is a force behind nature.
Throughout the entire work there are insinuations of the musical characteristics of the Colombian ”cumbia,” which is a traditional folk dance in that country. In the first movement, the limits of heterophonic texture are explored, which at the same serve as an element to imitate the sound and manner of the musical development of the Colombia ”gaitas” (a type of duct flute). The second movement reveals a musical display much more contrapuntal and energetic, and also involves the rhythmic air of the “gaitas merengue.”
A number of contemporary instrumental techniques are used, such as playing and singing, tongue slapping and whistle tones, which are explained in the score.
