CMP 1503
String quartet for two violins, viola and cello.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: twenty-nine minutes.
Set includes a score and four parts.
Within a largely neo baroque context Brescia develops similar motives throughout the four movements of this string quartet. Subtitled “Impressions of the Andes,” the melodic language is reminiscent of typical Ecuadorian rhythms, such as the “sanjuanito,” combined with bird calls and other musical effects derived from nature. Brescia composed this work in 1918 for the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival. After the premier performance by the resident string quartet the panel of judges described it as “most interesting.” In 1919 the Chamber Music Society of San Francisco String Quartet performed it on one of its fall programs.
Approximately 29 minutes long, the work’s four movements are subtitled as follows: “Beholding the Greatness of the Cordillera,” “Crepuscular Idyll,” “Aborigenes Dance,” and “Bacchical Feast.”
