“Escena y Danzas” draws on Panamanian folklore, both from song and dance traditions.
The opening movement, “Lament,” is based on the “mejorana,” an autochthonous musical/poetic genre of Panama in which a farmer expresses his troubles or knowledge in the form of sung poetry. This style has been very popular since the 16th century. The second movement is a dance that owes its style to the traditional “punto,” which is an elegant courting dance. Composed with intermediate oboists in mind, the work is intended as a melancholic tribute to the musical traditions of the composer’s native country.
