The four pieces that form this collection belong to composers who cultivated the genre known as “salon music” (música de salón in Spanish), which represents a kind of parallel Romanticism that stood apart from musical drama, such as opera and zarzuela, as well as symphonic and chamber music. The characteristics of this genre are well represented in these pieces, namely: brevity, the predominance of a “cantabile” melody, the use of popular dance tunes, a simplicity of form, and a technical level suitable for gifted amateurs.
