Solo for oboe with piano accompaniment.
Grade 4+. Approx. duration: 7 minutes.
Set includes a piano score and one part.
“Laberintos” for oboe and piano is dedicated to Venezuelan oboist Vicente Moronta, who is the organizer of the “Oboe and its Labyrinths” series of concerts, the most recent iteration of which occurred on December 22, 2018 in Caracas, Venezuela. Moronta premiered the work on this same program.
In its three movements the composer uses a technique known as sonorous kineticism, which is based on the fixation of predetermined rhythmic patterns that gradually change while at the same time new sonorous elements are introduced. These elements oblige the listener to constantly reconfigure the gestalt of the metric accents that create expectations that are either confirmed or refuted by the outcome of the music. Based on diatonic and octatonic scales, the musical interest of the work is centered on the perplexity caused by these sonorous effects, which are analogous to that seen in the plastic arts, such as in the Necker cube or the Rubin vase.
